Hi there! Welcome to Ask, Save, Earn

You have more power over your money than you realize.

That simple message is what Ask, Save, Earn is all about.

This weekly newsletter, sent to your inbox every Thursday morning, is meant to help you pay less, earn more and keep more of your hard-earned money by asking the right questions in various everyday situations. That includes:

  • Reducing medical bills

  • Lowering credit card interest rates

  • Talking to your partner or elderly parents about money for the first time

  • Even just splitting the bill at a group dinner without getting stuck paying 2/3 of the bill.

My name’s Matt Schulz, and I’m on a mission to spread this message, which is also at the heart of my book, “Ask Questions, Save Money, Make More: How To Take Control Of Your Financial Life.” Thousands of copies have been sold already, and you can buy it here through Amazon, Barnes & Noble or Bookshop.org.)

The book also includes word-for-word scripts to help you ask these key questions.

If you sign up for this newsletter, I’ll send you our free guide called “3 Scripts To Lower Your Bills Today.”

This easy-to-use guide is a perfect introduction to what Ask, Save, Earn is all about. And if you find it useful, tell your friends and family.

After all, one of the few things that feels as good as saving money or earning more of it is helping your loved ones do the same.

My promise to you

This newsletter is all about you.

Here is my promise to you: Every edition of this newsletter will have some takeaway that you can use and apply to your own financial life.

They’re making a difference.

“I emailed Matt to share this tale, in part because of the funny timing twist, but mostly for him to add my $1,000 to his tote board tallying up all the money he’s helped people save.”

“It was finally time to call and ask my credit card to waive my annual fee last week, and I did it and got the YES! I kept your advice in mind by being kind and coming prepared with my data. This felt like a huge win for me and my family! Thank you!”

Here’s some more of what you’ll get when you subscribe to Ask, Save, Earn:

  • Helpful money tips, news and advice: I’ll share helpful information from my book, along with links, articles, podcasts and more from around the Internet that I think you’ll find useful. I’ll also share many of the things that I write for LendingTree and interviews I do that provide practical, actionable advice.

  • A chance to share your story: The more voices, the better — and the more diverse that group of voices, the better. Let’s grow the Ask, Save, Earn community together and see how we can all help each other be better with money.

  • The chance to be among the very first to know news about me, my book and this newsletter! Sales! Media tours! Giveaways! Events! Interviews! If it is big news around my book, my newsletter or me, this community will find out about it first.

Here at Ask, Save, Earn, you’re going to learn a lot about money — and even have some fun along the way. I’d love it if you’d join me.

Who am I?

I’m a nationally recognized personal finance expert whose job is to help people make smart decisions about their money.

I’m the author of “Ask Questions, Save Money, Make More: How To Take Control Of Your Financial Life,” which has sold thousands of copies since it was published in March 2024 by Countryman Press, a division of W.W. Norton.

In my day job as a money expert with LendingTree, I’ve appeared on Good Morning America, the Today Show, CBS Evening News, CNBC and Fox Business. I’ve been quoted many times in the Wall Street Journal, New York Times and USA Today as well as local TV stations, newspapers and radio stations from coast to coast — and a few international ones, too.

But I’m not an economist or a banker. I’m a former journalist, but I’m also a guy who had $10,000 in credit card debt in his 20s because of one bad decision after another. (I also had a monthly payment on a brand-new car.) Now, my job is to help people make smarter decisions about money than I made.

Sometimes I even take you along with me, giving a behind-the-scenes look at the life of a personal finance expert. Here’s an example…

That’s just a taste, and there’s plenty more exciting stuff to come. I’d love for you to be part of it.

Until next time!

Matt Schulz
