These 3 simple scripts can help you lower your bills today

Hi there, my friend.

My name’s Matt. Everything I do with my free weekly newsletter, called Ask, Save, Earn, revolves around one powerful idea…

You have more power over your money than you realize.

Read that again.

It is easy to feel hopeless and powerless in the wake of sky-high prices, a challenging job market and an uncertain economy. The truth, however, is that you’re anything but powerless.

In fact, there are simple steps you can take today that can make a difference in your financial life, and they often don’t require much more than a phone call.

I’ve done them myself.

I’ve empowered many others to do them. For example, check out this example from a recent post.

“I emailed Matt to share this tale, in part because of the funny timing twist, but mostly for him to add my $1,000 to his tote board tallying up all the money he’s helped people save.”

Now, I want to help you do them, too, because I know they work.

Of course, nothing’s perfect. There are no guarantees in life, but the truth is that often if you’re willing to make a phone call or ask a question, amazing things can happen.

The Ask, Save, Earn Promise

I’m Matt Schulz. I’ve spread my message — that you have way more power over your money than you realize — in thousands of interviews with most any TV station, newspaper and website you can name. Here’s a look at a media tour I did in December 2025…

I’ve talked about this power as the face of LendingTree, one of the world’s biggest personal finance websites. I’ve also done it in my book, “Ask Questions, Save Money, Make More: How To Take Control Of Your Financial Life,” which has sold thousands of copies since it came out in March 2024. Now, I’m doing it through my free weekly newsletter called Ask, Save, Earn.

This weekly newsletter, sent to your inbox every Thursday morning, is meant to help you pay less, earn more and keep more of your hard-earned money by asking the right questions in various everyday situations, including:

  • Reducing medical bills

  • Lowering credit card interest rates

  • Talking to your partner or elderly parents about money for the first time

  • Even just splitting the bill at a group dinner without getting stuck paying 2/3 of the bill.

Ask, Save, Earn comes with this promise: Every edition of this newsletter will have some takeaway that you can use and apply to your own financial life.

Every single one.

What’s inside

  • A script you can use today to lower your credit card interest rate.

  • A simple way to pay less for prescriptions.

  • How to ask for a lower cellphone bill or Internet bill

  • Plus a bonus: One simple question that can be used as an opening line for many, many negotiations to lower bills.

Why this matters

It matters because you can save real money, and while there are never guarantees, your chances of success are likely way better than you realize. For example, a 2025 LendingTree survey showed that 83% of people who asked for a lower interest rate on their credit card in the past year got one.

83%! That’s huge. And the average reduction was about 6 percentage points, like going from a 25% APR down to 19%.

Most people overpay for two main reasons: They don’t know that they can successfully ask for breaks, or they don’t know what to say to get their way.

You don’t need to be an expert negotiator, though. You just need the right question, phrased in the right way. And that question is often way less complicated than you’d think.

That’s what this guide gives you.

These scripts are written so you can use them in real conversations with companies without feeling like you’re being overly pushy or aggressive.

Let’s get started!

This isn’t about getting rich. It isn’t a gimmick or a trick. It is about empowering you to make small changes that can make a real difference in your financial life, starting today.

Want proof? Here’s a comment from a recent post…

“It was finally time to call and ask my credit card to waive my annual fee last week, and I did it and got the YES! I kept your advice in mind by being kind and coming prepared with my data. This felt like a huge win for me and my family! Thank you!”

You’re already taken a huge step by just being willing to ask. Now let’s make sure you have the words to do it right and get the results you want.
